I often talk about everything being made up of energy, or universal life force. Every inhabited continent, and even most islands, have some sort of cultural relationship with a universal life force energy. According to these traditions, this energy sustains all life. The ‘energy’ is referred to in various ways – in the western world, it is referred to as good old ‘life force’; Qi/chi in China, Prana in India, Mana in Polynesia, Nyama in West Africa, Ki in Japan, and many more.
Everything has this life force, and because of that, everything vibrates at its own frequency, and therefore is able to affect other things that vibrate as frequency around it. Sometimes this frequency can be used to fix things, like broken bones[1], and sometimes it is used to destroy things, like cancer cells using radiotherapy. [2] A form of vibrational exercise has even been proven to improve dementia symptoms[3]. Herein lies the link between frequency (vibration) and health.
A generally healthy human body vibrates at approximately 7.5Hz. If it’s SUPER happy, it vibrates higher, and if it’s ill, it vibrates lower. Scientific research has shown that different parts of our bodies have their own sonic signature. In other words, the sound of your heart cells differs from the sound of your lung cells. When parts of the body become stressed or diseased, they no longer vibrate at their optimal frequency. For example, cancerous cells have a different frequency to healthy cells[4] and this is now being used to diagnose earlier.
So… people have energy frequencies, and cells have energy frequencies. These frequencies are susceptible to being changed by a variety of things which all help towards ensuring one’s life force (or energy) is free flowing. Many ‘therapies’ deal with unblocking the flow of this universal life force inside the body. The belief is that when it cannot flow freely, it manifests itself in various physical, emotional and mental symptoms. When it does flow freely, the body has the ability to heal itself.
Reiki
“When giving Reiki, practitioners have been shown to emit electro-magnetic or bio-magnetic energy from their hands. The frequencies of the energy emitted vary from one moment to the next; but many appear to correspond to those that medical researchers have identified as being the optimum frequencies for stimulating the healing process in tissues, bones, and other body parts so far investigated.”[5] (UK Reiki Federation)
Acupuncture
“Traditional acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy, or “life force”, flows through the body in channels called meridians. This life force is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). Practitioners who use acupuncture in the traditional way believe that when Qi does not flow freely through the body, this can cause illness. They also believe acupuncture can restore the flow of Qi, and so restore health.” [6] (NHS UK)
EFT or ‘tapping’
“EFT is a practical self-help method that involves using the fingers to gently tap on the body’s acupuncture points along the meridian lines of Chinese medicine. It is often referred to as ‘EFT Tapping’ or simply as ‘Tapping’. The therapeutic effects of this technique are recognized around the world. One can use EFT tapping for anxiety, weight loss issues, pain, stress and many other issues.”[7] (EFT International)
OTHER FREQUENCIES
Sound
You might have heard of Reiki drumming, Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, or maybe even just good old music. Each of these things have the ability to alter a person’s frequency.
“Sound therapists believe that we are all made up of different energy frequencies. They use sound frequencies to interact with these, thus attempting to rebalance the body’s energy.”[8] (The Guardian Newspaper)
“Sound Therapy uses sound, music and specialist instruments played in therapeutic ways, combined with deep self-reflection techniques to improve health and wellbeing. The BAST method of sound therapy combines carefully considered therapeutic sound techniques which have been shown to affect physiology, neurology and psychology with a form of reflective enquiry (a kind of questioning). This approach has been shown to be very effective at improving health and wellbeing. The therapeutic sound and sound therapy techniques are delivered using tonal and rhythmic instruments and voice. The tonal instruments used are Himalayan and crystal singing bowls, gongs and tuning forks.”[9] (British Academy of Sound Therapy)
Colour
“Colour Therapy uses the energy relating to each of the seven spectrum colours of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Each of the spectrum colours is simply light of varying wavelengths, thus each colour has its own particular energy. These energies resonate with the energy of each of the seven main chakras/energy centres of the body. Balance of the energy in each of the body’s chakras is very important for health and wellbeing. Colour therapy can help to re-balance and/or stimulate these energies by applying the appropriate colour to the body and therefore re-balance our chakras.”[10] (Colour Therapy Healing, UK)
Crystals
Did you ever own a quartz watch? Did you ever wonder WHY it was called a quartz watch? It’s because it used a small quartz crystal to charge the battery. Why? Because the quartz crystal vibrates at a certain frequency.
“Essentially, a quartz watch is battery powered. The watch uses a low-frequency, tiny piece of quartz crystal (silicon-dioxide) placed either like an integrated circuit and chemically etched into shape, or shaped like a tuning fork. That quartz crystal serves as the oscillator.
The battery sends electricity to the quartz crystal through an electronic circuit. The quartz oscillator vibrates quickly and with precise frequency (32,768 times/second) in response to the electronic charge. The circuit counts the vibrations and generates regular electric pulses of one per second. The pulses drive the small motor that spins the watch’s hands – offering accurate time measurement (until the battery slows and dies).”[11] (Hamilton Jewelers)
Crystal ‘healing’ is based on this. Because each crystal vibrates at a certain frequency, it can be placed on the body in certain places in order to change frequency, which in turn will encourage the body to heal itself.
So, you see, the field of energy work is so varied and I find, so exciting. I wanted to compile this little introduction because it’s an area of work that I will talk about a lot, and I hope that this document has gone a little way to explaining some of this very extensive topic.
